6 months free gym membership loophole- UK residents only!

Saw this on moneysavingexpert.com, and I immediately signed up! I think it’s very worth it, 6 months of free gym membership in the trendy Cannons or Holmes Place gyms (not the off-peak membership, full membership that you can go anytime) by just buying Prudential Health insurance policy. I requested for a quote online and it only cost me £15 a month. So effectively, I have to pay £90 for the insurance and 6 months of gym membership. It’s a good deal considering the fact that it might cost up to £400 for 6 months gym membership!

The steps for this loophole:
1) Ask for an online quote and choose the following options for the cheapest policy:
* The highest excess of £1000
* The most basic cover
* Exclude London hospitals (you can do this even if you live in London)
2) Then, wait for the insurance pack being posted to your address and activate your gym membership before 28/11/2006.

The catch:
- After six months, you have to pay £25 if you want to cancel the gym membership. So effectively, you pay £115 (£90 + £25). You can still continue the gym membership for a fixed £25 a month (or £50 a month if you choose Holmes Place Kensington, Mayfair, Broadgate or Canary Riverside).

How to cancel?
- After 6 months, you just need to cancel your insurance and your gym membership will automatically be cancelled.

Snapfish, an online photo printing website (owned by HP) is offering 20 free prints for new registrants.

And if you put in the code SKYPHOTO during checkout, you get free P&P, which means you pay nothing at all! I’ve tried this before and the photos were delivered completely free (and quick fast too).

You do have to put in your debit/credit card details, but I was not charged a single penny. I think it’s for validation purposes. Besides that, it’s a reputable company.

You just have to put in that code during checkout. I’m not sure whether it will work or not as I haven’t try this before, but there were sites saying that it works. Use the same free delivery code and there you go, 40 photo prints completely free.

It’s been about 2 months since I signed up for this free IPod Nano thingy. Please read my previous part of my quest in getting the free IPod Nano here: Part 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Here’s the latest update:

How to get a free IPod Nano [Part 4]

Update on my free IPod Nano attempt. Please read the earlier parts before you proceed with this.

After about 8 or 9 days, my offer is approved my Freepay.com, so it’s still possible for someone to get a completely free IPod Nano! But one thing though, for better chance, your referrals have to sign up on the same day as you. In that way, they will be approved on the same time as you. As for me, only 1 person signed up under me and completed the offer just one day after I signed myself up. So at the moment, I have 1 approved referral (green icon) and 4 more to go! Grrr…. Seems like I won’t be able to get my IPod Nano on time before the free trial of ScreenSelect ends. 12 more days remaining on my free trial period.

What I’ve realised from this program:
- Somehow, I felt this is just like doing anMLM program. Friends will start avoiding you for no reason, afraid that I might want to kept on bugging them to sign up. I did not intend to do that, I will only ask once and if that person is not interested, I will accept it. But still….

- Selling a product is difficult. What more, I’ve just gotten myself a marketing job. I guess it’ll be a tough road for me. But still…this is a good experience.

How to get a free IPod Nano [Part 2]

I just received the email from ScreenSelect, informing me about the activation of my account (remember the 1 offer that I had to sign up in order to get the IPod Nano?). It took them more than 2 days just to get my account activated? However, I realised one thing though. The email was dated 19th of September, which was a day after my sign-up date. So I think it must be GMail’s problem. Had anyone experienced this kind of problems with GMail before? Anyway, here’s the screen shot of the email:

Although I’ve signed up for 1 offer, it still appears on my account page of Freepay.com that I haven’t sign up for anything. According to them, it may take up to 15 days or more for that to happen. It’s day 3 today, so I guess I just have to wait. Here’s the screenshot:

Notice that I’ve got some people signed up under me already. But I don’t know why most of them didn’t post any comments or mention anything.

Will update more if there are any updates. I’ve received quite a lot of “flame” when I tried to get people to sign up. Well, if you really think this is a scam, why not give me a chance to prove it whether it’s right or wrong? Just follow the steps and there’s a chance for not paying even a single penny for this.

Actually, got to know this from LcF’s Ideal Gadget. I’m a bit skeptical about this, thinking that this might be another scam. But after I did some research on the net, I’ve decided to give it a go. I’ll write the step by step guide here, until the day the IPod Nano arrives to my home *fingers crossed*. So today will be the part 1 of the story.

Summary:

- Complete one of the offers (My suggestion: [UK offers] ScreenSelect.co.uk, a DVD rental company, take about a week to receive the credit, cancel before the 21 days free trial ends to avoid charges. [US offers] Almost the same for E-Fax, sign up for the 31 days free trial).

A: Be careful as there many sites out there which are merely scammers. I’m trying this one by FreePay.com (formerly known as Gratis Networks). It has good reviews from forums and even from Wired News saying that they really do give out free stuffs like IPods, PSPs, and etc. Basically, the steps are:

1. Sign up on their site.
2. Complete an offer from their sponsors (might need to pay a small amount, or free if you’re smart)
3. Refer 5 friends and make them complete 1 offer each as well.
4. After that, the IPod will be all set to be despatched to your house!

So, how does it really work? (quoted from Wired News)

Here’s how it works: FreeiPods.com promises an iPod or a $250 gift certificate to anyone who signs up for various online promotions and persuades five other people to participate.

Subscribers are given a choice of 10 different offers, including a 45-day trial of AOL and a two-week trial of Ancestry.com’s genealogy service. Typically, the offers are free and easily canceled.

Once the trials are over — for both the main subscriber and the referrals — the free iPod is dispatched.

So their main target is for people to sign up under the sponsors. But that doesn’t mean you have to pay a whole lot of money, if you know which offer is worth going for. And that’s what I’m aiming too.

I signed up for ScreenSelect, a DVD rental company. It’s giving out 5 DVD rentals for their free trials. Monthly payment is £9.99, but you don’t have to pay for it if you cancel before the end of trial period (21 days). You can cancel the account anytime you want. You have to submit your card details to them for verification purposes though (Solo, Switch, Visa, Mastercard accepted) but you’ll not be charged. I signed up with them using my debit card.

Now all I have to do is to wait for 5 people to sign up under me. I need some help here, but I will help you in return if you do sign up under me. Once you’ve signed up and given the green light approval from Freepay.com, I’ll post your referral link here to help you get your IPod Nano too.

Free Visitors Map Counter

I really like the display of a map on my site, showing where my visitors came from. I’ve tried hunting for it last time, and found these two very nice one:

ClustrMap
This is the first one I’ve found, been using it for quite some time. It was previously known as HitMaps (for only a limited number of testers), but they’ve expanded the project and now it’s called ClustrMap. It was closed registration earlier (only by invitations), but the last time I’ve checked it, it’s free for registration by the public now (as from 13th of September). Sample of the map? Look at the right sidebar of this blog.

What does it do?

We provide you with a link to a thumbnail map, like the one you see in the lower left of this page; when it loads, it increments a counter and shows the locations of all the visitors to your page, cumulatively (yes, even for ridiculously large numbers); clicking on it reveals a larger world map display, and (optionally) lets you zoom in on the different continents.

What’s the catch?

For light/casual users (< 1000 visitors daily, with no cumulative limit) there's no catch: the service is really free, forever (not just for a 'trial period'), and stores cumulative totals up to many hundreds of thousands of visitors and beyond. To pay for the servers needed to scale up the service, big/commercial users get extra features and are allowed to process a larger number of visitors. See the products page for details.

Conclusion: Not suitable for very heavy users. Suitable for me.

GeoLoc
This one is really cool….The design is so nice and the animation….wow. Just beautiful. The main site is in French, so you might need a bit of help by Babel Fish. But if you’re good at guessing, well, you can try signing up without Babel Fish translation (it’s pretty easy). Limited to 500 connections per day (meaning 500 page views? or 500 visitors? What Is Konfabulator?

Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.

What sets Konfabulator apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today’s advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X.

I really like Konfabulator because it looks cool yet so useful. More importantly, it’s now free since Yahoo took over. However, don’t get too carried away because it’s really a resource hungry application (don’t blame me when your computer slows down and work like a snail =P ).

Guess-the-google Game

I found this free game called Guess-The-Google. First, I have to warn you, I’ve tried it and it’s addictive!

What is the game all about?
You’ll be given a collection of photos from Google Image Search and then you have to guess the keyword used to find these images. It’s not as easy as it sounds though.

After creating Montage-a-google, several people wrote to me suggesting I make a game based on the same technology. Montage-a-google is a simple web app that uses Google’s image search to generate a large gridded montage of images based on keywords (search terms) entered by the user. Guess-the-google reverses this process by picking the keywords for you, the player must then guess what keyword made up the image – it’s surprisingly addictive.

They also provide their company’s address on the website so I think it’s legit. Besides, there’s no need to pay for anything (not even delivery). The reason for the mousepad to be free sounds logical (sponsored by ads printed on it). I’m afraid they might send spam to my email so I’ve used my “specialised spam email” to register. (Meaning: I have an email account just for spams, hehe ). But make sure your email is a working one because they need you to comfirm your email address. They would still have my home address for the delivery though, but I don’t think they can send spam to my house, can they? If they want to send brochures, I don’t mind because I can sell to “paper lama” (recycle) and earn a few cents. LOL… So now I’ll just wait for it to be sent to me (10 weeks long? Grr..). Wonder how the quality will be like…hopefully I can use my optical mouse on it. I will write a “review” when it arrives.

Free 10-Mins SkypeOut (VoIP) International Call (Day 3)

Today is Free SkypeOut Day 3! And this is my third post about this free VoIP service.

I realised I did not provide much details about Skype, how to get the free minutes and how useful VoIP is.

What is VoIP?
If you don’t know what VoIP (or Voice over Internet Protocol) is, just take it as an internet telephone. Usually, PC to PC calls are free, whereas calls to landline and mobile phones are at a very low rate (much lower than normal telephone call rates). If you want to get more technical about VoIP, head over to HowStuffWorks to find out what it actually is, how it works and etc.

What is Skype?
So what is Skype? Skype is just one of the providers of VoIP service. There are a lot of VoIP services out there, but I’ve only tried Skype before. To be honest, I’m really impressed with the voice quality! (even though it was quite bad sometimes, probably due to my cheap headset). What other stuffs do you need for you to use Skype? Very simple, you need your internet connection (preferably broadband), a headset, microphone, computer (how can you forget that! ) and you’re all set to go!

You just need to purchase SkypeOut credit to make phone calls from your PC using Skype to other landline/mobile phone numbers all around the world(it’s really cheap, check out their rates per minute). Otherwise, just use the free PC to PC call. Recently, they introduced services like SkypeIn (where you can have your own Skype telephone number so people can call you from anywhere) and VoiceMail. Pretty cool, huh?

Today is Day 3 of this free giveaway. I think it’s very useful for those who’ve never tried SkypeOut before. Do you want to know who your visitors are, where they come from and how do they found your website?

I just found a pretty good website stat counter not long ago. It’s called StatCounter. One big advantage of this is, it’s free. And it offers a lot more advantages compared to other free stats out there.

I’ve used a free SiteMeter before for quite some time before I discovered Stat Counter. SiteMeter is kinda good but after trying StatCounter, I realised StatCounter is a lot better. Here are the reasons:

- graphical representation
- invisible on your webpage
- full ip address of the visitors
- keyword analysis
- visitors’ country
- most popular pages list
- multiple website statistics under one single account (very useful if you have many websites)
- you can export the stats and download them as MS Excel file.

Isn’t it amazing? You get all that for free! None of these are provided by SiteMeter. But of course, there are limitations (eg log size limit = 100 visitors only). However, I still feel it’s the best free website stat so far. What do you think?
